India sends more international students to Canada than any other country — over 200,000 per year. If you're one of them, or you're planning to study in Canada, understanding Express Entry is the single most important thing you can do for your future.
Express Entry is Canada's main immigration system for skilled workers. It uses a points-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank applicants. The highest-ranked candidates receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence.
As an Indian student in Canada, you already have a head start. Canadian education adds points, Canadian work experience adds points, and your PGWP gives you the work permit to get that experience.
Age: The younger you are, the more points you get. Apply early — points drop after 30.
Language: IELTS CLB 9 in all four abilities adds significant points. Many Indian students score CLB 8 — retaking IELTS to reach CLB 9-10 can add 30-50 points.
Canadian education: A 2+ year Canadian degree adds 30 points. Even a 1-year post-grad certificate counts.
Canadian work experience: 1 year of skilled work in Canada (NOC TEER 0-3) adds substantial points. This is why using your PGWP wisely is critical.
If your CRS score is below the draw cutoff, a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nomination adds 600 points — virtually guaranteeing an ITA. Here are the most relevant for Indian students:
Ontario has streams specifically for international students who graduated from Ontario colleges and universities. If you studied in Ontario and have a job offer, this is your fastest route.
Strong for tech workers. If you work in software, data, or engineering in BC, the Tech stream regularly draws candidates with lower CRS scores.
Good for healthcare, trades, and engineering graduates. Alberta has been actively targeting international graduates from Alberta institutions.
